What is Microsoft Power Automate ?

Power Automate is Microsoft's workflow service and part of the Power Platform. It connects Microsoft 365, Dynamics, and over 1,000 other services, and with Desktop Flows, it includes an RPA component that records and plays back clicks in older Windows software.

Typical uses include: approval processes via Teams, saving Outlook attachments to SharePoint, and distributing reports from Excel. Its strength lies in the Microsoft stack — nothing integrates Office apps more deeply. Basic functionalities are already included in many 365 licenses, and the desktop version for single-user RPA is even free for Windows users.

Outside the Microsoft ecosystem, the tool can feel cumbersome: Zapier and Make are quicker to set up and cover web apps better. Additionally, its licensing model regularly confuses even admins, as premium connectors and RPA incur extra costs.

It's the right choice if your company already operates within Microsoft 365 and you want to automate processes there. If you primarily work with web tools outside the Microsoft ecosystem, opt for Make or Zapier instead.
