Looker Studio is Google's free BI tool for dashboards and reports. As of April 2026, it will revert to its previous name, Data Studio, as it was before the 2022 rebranding; its functionalities and links remained unchanged during the name change.
Typically, it handles monthly marketing reports from Google Ads and GA4, sales figures from Sheets, and larger analyses from BigQuery. With over 600 connectors, it also integrates with third-party tools, and gallery templates save you from starting from scratch. Its key strength: reports are live and shareable like a Google Doc, eliminating the need to send PDFs to your boss.
While Power BI handles large data models better and Tableau offers more refined visualizations, both require licenses and more extensive training. Looker Studio's weakness: it can become sluggish with numerous data sources, and serious data preparation should ideally be handled in a data warehouse beforehand.
It's ideal for marketing teams and SMEs that use Google tools and want to automate their reporting. If your workflow is Microsoft-centric, Power BI is the better choice.
